Opening of the Contemporary Art Gallery

On March 31, 2006, the Wannieck Gallery of contemporary art was opened in the city of Brno. The former machine shop in Vaňkovka underwent reconstruction and now comprises the largest exhibition space for contemporary art in the Czech Republic, covering an area of 3,000 m2.
The Machine Shop building is owned by Jižní Centrum Brno a.s., which is part of a heritage-protected group of buildings in the former factory complex. The company has rented this building to Mediagate s.r.o. for the purpose of establishing a permanent exhibition of visual arts.
The gallery will display exhibits from the years 1985 - 2005 by the most significant Czech artists. Approximately 300 works will be exhibited in total. After a year, the permanent exhibition will be changed. The foundation of the displayed exhibits is the collection of Richard Adam, who dedicated his life to shaping a comprehensive and conceptual collection of visual arts. Some of the exhibited works are on loan from the artists themselves.
The permanent exhibition will be open to the public every day except Thursday, which will be a closing day, and Friday, when the space will be reserved for tours for the youngest generation of elementary and secondary schools.
Part of the exhibition space will include a bookstore and small artifacts sales area, a small café, and a conference hall for 250 participants, which will be opened in September this year.
From 2007 onwards, the first floor will host two-month-long solo exhibitions of foreign artists, organized in collaboration with foreign partner galleries.
On the occasion of the opening, Mediagate s.r.o. is publishing a comprehensive publication titled The Collection of Richard Adam subtitled Czech Painting 1985-2005, in which contemporary art experts summarize this period and draw from the concept of the mentioned collection.
The grand opening took place on March 30, 2006, at 7:00 PM for invited guests from the ranks of city and regional representatives, curators, representatives of cultural institutions, and the artists themselves.
