Litoměřice - In Litoměřice, they want to build an underground parking garage beneath the square. The city council approved the preparation of a feasibility study. Heritage preservationists have long criticized the fact that cars are parked in the historic city center. This was reported by the spokesperson of Litoměřice, Eva Břeňová, in a press release.
Heritage preservationists and the Ministry of Culture demand restrictions on parking in the square, as the city is classified as a historic site. "Business owners and people who fear that the square will become a lifeless place have long opposed a complete parking ban in the center," added Břeňová. Despite the introduction of paid parking in 2005, the square in Litoměřice is still full of cars.
According to Deputy Mayor Karel Krejza (ODS), there is no other option than an underground parking garage. However, the construction could be complicated by the extensive network of underground tunnels beneath the square. "Even if it turns out that building an underground parking garage is feasible, we must try to obtain a grant. The city's budget does not allow us to execute such a financially demanding project," the deputy mayor added.
In the last two years, Litoměřice has successfully completed its fourth major project, a senior home in 2009, the second bridge over the Elbe, and last year the renovation of the winter stadium. In March of this year, they ceremonially opened the reconstructed Gothic castle, which also houses an exposition of Czech winemaking with a tasting room alongside the congress hall.
