Ostrava - The first phase of the reconstruction of the Jiří Myron Theatre in Ostrava is nearing completion. The theatre has been in regular operation since September, and on Sunday it will open a brand new intimate stage called Theatre "12" with a capacity of 60 spectators, said Šárka Swiderová, spokesperson for the National Theatre of Moravian-Silesian Region (NDM), today.

According to NDM director Jiří Nekvasil, the new stage will offer audiences an intimate atmosphere and a unique connection between the actor and the audience. "We will transfer chamber drama productions that have been performed so far in the rehearsal room of the Antonín Dvořák Theatre there. And in the near future, besides drama, other NDM ensembles—opera, operetta, and musical—will also find a unique space for their chamber and experimental projects, and eventually, ballet as well," Nekvasil stated.

Next to the entrance of the new stage, in the place where tickets were previously sold, a new theatre bar called Ve dvanáctce will be opened. The former butcher shop in Milíčová Street will also have a new purpose, becoming an Atelier at NDM focused on working with children and other theatre enthusiasts. The modernization includes the creation of a modern attic rehearsal room for the operetta and musical ensemble, as well as a new ballet hall. There will also be hotel-type rooms for visiting artists.

The Jiří Myron Theatre was originally opened as the Czech National House in 1894 and is the oldest cultural building in Ostrava. "In its new form, we are now returning some spaces to their original function. On the ground floor at number 14, there will be a daily café, which we will enter through a new passage, and where the theatre's box office will also be newly located. On the first floor, a new ceremonial hall intended for concerts and other cultural and social activities is being created in the place of the original social hall," the director said. By autumn, the complex of buildings will have a new facade, and the inscription National House will also return to its original place.

"The work of the first phase is finishing, but we are already preparing the next phase of the reconstruction of the Jiří Myron Theatre. It will concern the auditorium, the stage, and the revitalization of the courtyard of the premises. We already have completed project documentation for the modernization of stage technologies, which have exceeded their lifespan after more than 30 years,"
Nekvasil added. "Our project will elevate the theatre's technological equipment several levels higher, closer to the demands and expectations of 21st-century audiences, and allow for much greater variability in scenic transformations," he concluded.

There are also plans for a large rehearsal and studio stage for 250 spectators, which will be created in one of the former exhibition pavilions at the Černá louka exhibition center. The Jiří Myron Theatre has the largest stage in the Moravian-Silesian Region and is one of the largest theatres in the Czech Republic.
