Prague - A new town hall will begin construction in the Prague district of Modřany. The management of Prague 12 handed over the construction site near Sofijské náměstí to a construction company at the end of March, which will carry out surface modifications in the coming weeks and then start building the building. The costs for the construction, which is to be completed in the autumn of next year, should not exceed 550 million crowns. The municipal district informed about this on its website.
First, it will be necessary to remove halls and material from the land, conduct an archaeological survey, and cut down decorative and spontaneous trees. "The project, of course, accounts for controlled felling, which must take place now - during the vegetative dormancy, but also for the planting of new greenery," said Mayor Jan Adamec (Pirates).
Currently, the town hall departments are housed in seven buildings, and their operation is inefficient, which motivated the previous management of the municipal district to prepare a project for the construction of a new town hall. The building will be on the land of the capital city, which is located near one of the current buildings of the municipal district between Písková and Generála Šišky streets. The new town hall will be barrier-free and will also include an underground parking lot.
The winner of the tender, who was successful based on the submission of the lowest-priced offer, was approved by the council in June 2017. The selection of the supplier was criticized by then-opposition councilors, who claimed it was non-transparent. The capital city will lend the town hall a quarter of a billion crowns, which the municipal district will repay over 14 years starting in 2023.
The original historical town hall of Modřany was demolished in the 1980s. In 2007, the management of the municipal district proposed using the Prior building at Sofijské náměstí. This unimplemented option would have cost an estimated 340 to 390 million crowns. Subsequently, Prague 12 had an analysis carried out, which showed that the most advantageous place for the construction of a new town hall is the land between Písková and Generála Šišky streets.
After last year's elections, the Coalition of Pirates, who ran together with the Greens, ODS, and TOP 09 was formed in Prague 12. After the elections in 2014, the municipal district was led by a coalition of ANO, ČSSD, and Change for Prague. In April 2017, Change for Prague moved to the opposition.
Prague 12, where approximately 56,250 residents live, is located in the southern part of the capital city. The municipal district includes the entire cadastral areas of Cholupice, Kamýk, Komořany, Modřany, and Točná.
