The government today interrupted the discussions on the housing support law, discrepancies persist

Prague – The government today suspended the discussion of the housing support law. After the cabinet meeting, Minister of Industry and Trade Jozef Síkela (STAN) told reporters. According to him, it is necessary to resolve the discrepancies that persist around the law, which will require, among other things, discussions with local authorities. The postponement of the approval of the law, which is supposed to create systematic support for people at risk of housing insecurity, was criticized on social media X by the Minister for Regional Development Ivan Bartoš (Pirates).

Before the cabinet meeting, individual government members had differing opinions on the form of the law. Minister of Transport Martin Kupka (ODS) stated that he wants the housing support law not to create new bureaucratic positions. On the other hand, Bartoš, who presented the proposal, considers the creation of around 200 new positions to be a good investment given that the law, according to him, could help up to 1.6 million people. Síkela did not respond to the question of whether the ministers resolved the dispute over bureaucratic positions at today's government meeting.

Bartoš criticized the postponement of the decision on X after the government meeting. "There is no time to lose! Czechia is literally sitting on a ticking time bomb of housing benefits, and time is slowly running out. Last year it consumed 18 billion crowns, thus doubling year on year. Without a blanket prevention of housing insecurity, which today threatens 1.6 million people, these expenditures will explode," he wrote. According to him, the expenses associated with the implementation of the law will be lower than the achieved savings.

The Minister for Regional Development also pointed out that the approval of the law is one of the conditions for the disbursement of European funds to Czechia as part of the National Recovery Plan. "So we have time until the second half of next year. Otherwise, Czechia will lose nearly ten billion crowns in European funds to the state budget," he stated.

The proposed housing support law is part of the so-called Housing for Life reform advocated by the Ministry for Regional Development, which aims, among other things, to ensure the necessary investments for the construction and reconstruction of affordable rental apartments. The regulation that ministers were supposed to discuss today is intended to create systematic support for individuals threatened by housing insecurity. It includes the establishment of contact and advisory centers that would help people in need find and maintain housing. At the same time, the law should provide private landlords with guarantees and compensations if they allocate their housing for vulnerable groups of people.

According to the Ministry for Regional Development, the goal of the proposed law is to reduce the extent of housing insecurity in the Czech Republic by creating systematic support for individuals in housing insecurity and those at risk of housing insecurity. The law is not intended to regulate the conditions for drawing benefits or supplements for housing, but ultimately, it should lead to more efficient use of housing benefits.
