Pardubice - The repair of the Green Gate in Pardubice is likely to begin in the summer. The structure from the 16th century is an entrance point to the heritage zone. The masonry of the monument is in poor condition and needs to be renovated. This was said to journalists today by the Deputy Mayor Jakub Rychtecký (We Live Pardubice/SOCDEM).
"It will depend on the speed of the contractor selection, but the ambition is to start during the summer," said Rychtecký. Costs exceeding 27 million crowns will be approved as a budget amendment by the councilors on Monday.
The construction is divided into two parts. The company is to repair the area in front of the gate, where new sanitary facilities and staff amenities will also be created. The main goal of the reconstruction is to restore the stone masonry.
In 2021, the city asked residents whether they wanted the Green Gate to remain unplastered or to be plastered again. It has not had plaster since 1912, when the city had it removed in the spirit of historical purism. "It holds that the stone masonry will be preserved, it will be professionally treated so that the Green Gate can continue to serve future generations," said the deputy.
The opposition was taken aback by the proposed budget change without the city discussing the proposal with the councilors. "It's strange, the town hall did not say that it would start repairs but is transferring money through a budget change without us knowing if this is the final amount, or if a project exists," said councilor Petr Kvaš (ODS).
The structure is 59 meters high and is a well-known landmark of the city. It was damaged by a fire in 1538. After the repairs, it was raised by 13 meters. Since 1542, it has had its current roofed appearance.
