Jan Bočan

The Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University in Prague announces with sorrow that on December 7, 2010, the significant Czech architect and educator Prof. Ing. arch. Jan Bočan passed away at the age of 73.

“For me, architecture is the creation of space. The measure of space is the person and their perceptions. For me, there is no difference between urbanism and architecture. They are only tasks that differ in scale and detail.
Architecture is space that is defined by mass. The priority is to compose space. The mass of the building is a means - material for defining space. I believe this is the essence of architectural creation.”
Jan Bočan was born in 1937 in Český Brod and graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University in 1962. He initially worked in the design studio Konstruktiva, later in the studio Beta PÚ VHMP, led by Ing. arch. Jan Šrámek. Together with architects Rothbauer, Novotný, Hřivnáč, and others, they created a productive team. Successes in architectural competitions also allowed the studio to establish contacts abroad and opened the way to prestigious commissions such as the construction of the Czechoslovak Embassy in London, the Czechoslovak Embassy in Brasília, and the Intercontinental Hotel in Prague. After November '89, in 1990, Jan Bočan returned as the head of the studio to his Alma Mater; since 1999, he has served as the head of the Institute of Design there. In 2005, he was appointed professor at the Czech Technical University in Prague. His architectural work remains closely connected with his pedagogical activities. Following the realization of the Czech Republic's embassy in Tbilisi, he was first appointed an honorary professor at the local university in 2005 and from 2009 to 2010 developed educational projects with this higher education institution. He also collaborates with universities in France, Germany, the USA, and Colombia.
