The world of monuments has been affected by sad news. A few days ago, master carpenter Petr Růžička (†68), who participated in the restoration of many medieval monuments, passed away. He was renowned for his constructions of medieval building machines and was the creator of the replica of a crane and wooden scaffolding, which were used during the experimental restoration of the Jakobínka tower in the Rožmberk Castle complex.
Through his work, Petr Růžička built upon the legacy of ancient master carpenters, utilizing traditional technologies and period building machines. He contributed to the preservation of several monuments in Kutná Hora, Slavonice, and Hradec Králové. He collaborated on the restoration of historic roofs in Cheb. He completely constructed a wooden bridge at Krakovec Castle. He is the author of a recently opened permanent exhibition of medieval building machines at the NTM's Center for Building Heritage in Plasy.
One of Petr Růžička's last major projects was the construction of a replica of a medieval crane, which he created in collaboration with designer Vít Mlázovský based on Leonardo da Vinci's drawings and was used during the restoration of the Jakobínka tower in Rožmberk nad Vltavou.
Petr Růžička was born on September 9, 1954, in Prague. He began working with wood at a secondary school focused on applied arts, where he studied carpentry. He wanted to continue his studies in architecture. However, because his father publicly condemned the occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1968, he was unable to continue his studies. After 1989, he studied philosophy at Charles University. During that time, he also became involved in historical and experimental carpentry. He researched period sources, worked with traditional carpentry tools, and gradually became one of the most renowned experts in the preservation of wooden historic roofs and ceilings. For his craftsmanship, he received the title of Bearer of the Tradition of Folk Crafts in 2022.
An extraordinary person has forever departed, a master of the carpentry trade whose skills are appreciated by conservators both in our country and abroad. He trained two generations of carpenters who will continue his work and for whom he will forever remain a symbol of honest craftsmanship.
You can reminisce about Petr Růžička while listening to Jaroslav Dušek's program on Czech Radio Dvojka, where he was a guest alongside architect Vít Mlázovský.
