The lecture and discussion series "Smart City," prepared by the Plzeň association Pěstuj prostor, reflects the current phenomenon of "smart city" and introduces the public to the penetrating principles of this contemporary concept into the areas of urban planning and city management. The final lecture, followed by a discussion, will focus on the essence of working with data information. It will take place on May 10th at 6 PM in the creative zone DEPO2015 on Presslova Street in Plzeň.
With the development of technology, new and more possibilities emerge for not only municipal governments but also individuals or groups from both professional and general public backgrounds to acquire data. These are rapidly increasing, and the data base that cities can use for their planning is also transforming. Separate city offices or city-established organizations are being created that focus on data collection, analysis, interpretation, publication, and evaluation.
Head of the Department of Data, Analysis, and Evaluation at the City Hall of Brno, Jan Zvara, will talk about how Brno handles data issues. In addition to presenting successful projects, he will also introduce less viable ones. The head of the GIS Department, Stanislav Štangl, from the City of Plzeň's Information Technology Administration, will then describe a specific process through which an amount of unorganized data was transformed into a useful tool.
Admission to the event is 60 CZK. Tickets will be available on-site and in the advance sale.

Brno native Jan Zvara completed his studies in Regional Geography and Regional Development at the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University in Brno, finishing in 2014 with a dissertation defense on the topic "Geographical Problems of Tourism Development in Southern Moravia." During his studies, he undertook a long-term foreign internship at the University of Osnabrück in Germany. While studying in 2006, he joined the City Strategy Office at the City Hall of Brno, where he was responsible for data management and interpretation. Since 2017, he has been the head of the newly established Department of Data, Analysis, and Evaluation at the City Hall of Brno, which created and manages the city data portal data.brno.cz and organizes the Brno in Numbers campaign annually.

Stanislav Štangl began his career in ICT after completing his studies at the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the University of West Bohemia in 1994. He currently holds the position of head of the GIS department at the City of Plzeň's Information Technology Administration. He is creating a geographic information system and mapping portal for Plzeň. Under his leadership, mapping layers and entire applications are created. He is involved in integrating maps into other public administration systems. Since 2017, his team has been participating in European projects HORIZON 2020, where they are developing the concept of transport modeling. In the Polivis and DUET projects – digital twin, simulations of digital transport models, air pollution, and noise have been developed for better urban development planning.
