Visitors from the Czech Republic and abroad will soon head to Ostrava for the international multidisciplinary music festival Colours of Ostrava. They will be able to choose from a diverse program, which this year will also offer the topic of global architecture as part of the discussion forum Meltingpot in the UniverCity zone, represented by three exceptional personalities. After nearly three years, leading world architect Steven Holl is returning to the city, and he will be joined by speakers Eva Jiřičná and Robert Konieczny. The UniverCity Ostrava stage is a joint project of the city of Ostrava, Ostrava University, and the VŠB-TUO (University of Mining and Technology Ostrava), continuing the traditional presentation of universities within the Colours of Ostrava festival.

“Quality architecture is crucial for Ostrava; the influence of significant architects on the designs of buildings in the city is a considerable benefit. Similarly, the issue of education and support for gifted and talented individuals, thanks to whom the city is significantly developing, is fundamental for us. Therefore, we are taking a number of steps to make the city attractive for young talents. The collaboration between the city and universities within the international discussion forum at the Colours of Ostrava festival is an ideal way to effectively offer topics to interested parties,” stated Jan Dohnal, the mayor of the city.

On Thursday, July 18, at 3 PM, interested parties can listen to a commentary by architect Robert Konieczny in the aforementioned UniverCity zone. Steven Holl's lecture is scheduled for July 19, 2024, at 4:30 PM. The following day, July 20, at 5 PM, speaker Eva Jiřičná will present. The titles of the architects' discussions are identical: “Global Architecture in Cities, in Ostrava.” Together with the architects, the topics will also be addressed by Jan Dohnal, the mayor, Lucie Baránková Vilamová, and Hana Tichánková, the deputy mayor. All three prominent architects are behind a number of exceptional works, including unique designs for Ostrava. Steven Holl (from Steven Holl Architects in New York and Architecture Acts in Prague) is a co-author of the redesign of the Ostrava Cultural House and the extension of the concert hall. Eva Jiřičná and Petr Vágner (from AI-DESIGN) designed the renovation of a high-rise building on Ostrčilova Street, and Robert Konieczny (and studio KWK Promes) is the author of the redesign of the former listed city slaughterhouse.

However, Ostrava is also a significant student and university center. The discussion “marathon” in the UniverCity zone will be enriched on Thursday, July 18, at 1:30 PM by Deputy Mayor Andrea Hoffmannová’s lecture titled “Ostrava is TalentCity: Supporting Talents.” Other speakers will include neurologist Ondřej Volný and Adéla Hradilová from MSIC. Ostrava has long supported talented children, students, and pupils. It focuses on systematic support for talent and, through activities, projects, and grant programs, promotes talent management in educational institutions. It also engages in international initiatives and seeks synergies within platforms that develop entrepreneurship. It draws inspiration and connects with innovative ecosystems at the European level. It seeks out, supports, and creates conditions for the development of talents.

It is also worth mentioning that leading world architect Steven Holl will not only give a lecture as part of the discussion forum but will also take on a special task on July 19. Together with other personalities, he will lay the cornerstone for the concert hall building. Simultaneously, he will discuss the current situation of the project with the construction team.
