Antiquarian Bookshop and Club Fiducia cordially invites you to a lecture:
Friday, September 15, 2017, at 6:00 PM Ostrava and the Typology of Socialist Cities lecture by American architectural historian Kimberly Elman Zarecor
What is a socialist city? How did it become socialist and what happened to it when socialism ended? A specialist in Czech architecture and urbanism will discuss her new research on the urban typology of socialist cities across communist Europe. Among other things, she will talk about how her research, focused on the urban development of Ostrava since the 1940s, was key to her understanding of socialist cities in other countries. She will also discuss her thesis that socialist urbanism and its economic and ideological strategies are still embedded in the environments of many cities in the region. While shopping centers and office towers may have replaced heavy industrial sectors, she argues that the logic of the socialist city remains present in today's neoliberal context.
