We cordially invite you to a lecture by Martin Zaiček from the Jaromír Krejcar Society about the history and recent developments of the case surrounding the abandoned Machnáč treatment house in Trenčianské Teplice.
Spas, mineral springs, treatment houses, fountains, spa houses, abandoned recreational areas, and the ruins of the utopia of humanism. All themes centered around the symbolically charged motif of water, which is the focus of the project-artistic group Abandoned (re)creation, also known as Opustená (re)kreácia. It was founded by photographer Andrea Kalinová and architect Martin Zaiček. Water brings and takes away, sedimentates, creates, and shapes. Water also led to the creation of one of the largest monuments of 20th-century architecture in Slovakia. The Machnáč treatment house in Trenčianské Teplice, designed by Prague architect Jaromír Krejcar in 1932, led to the transformation of the artistic group into a professional organization, the Jaromír Krejcar Society. The sole aim of the society is the purchase, rescue, and restoration of this unique work of Czechoslovak functionalism.
Martin Zaiček works in the non-profit organization Jaromír Krejcar Society, which has been striving for years to save the NKP Machnáč in Trenčianské Teplice. He is the author of a book series of guides to 20th-century architecture titled C20 as well as a co-author of interdisciplinary artistic research published in books: Architecture of Care dedicated to the rich history of post-war spa architecture in Slovakia, or Bratislava's Modern Fountains. Since 2012, he has been part of the artistic group Abandoned (re)creation, which links free artistic research and artistic activism with publication activities. For the European Capital of Culture Trenčín 2026, he is currently preparing the project Modernism 2.0.
The event is part of the HouseEurope! campaign and is held with the support of the State Fund for Culture of the Czech Republic and the Czech Architecture Foundation.
