On Thursday, November 21, 2019, at 6:30 PM, a presentation of the publication Architecture of Care will take place at the VI PER gallery in Karlín.
How is care related to architecture? What is the architecture of care? And are we caring for it sufficiently? Slovakia has rich sources of mineral waters that have transformed many places into spa zones and allowed for the creation of a large number of spa buildings. Although the development of spa towns began as early as the 19th century, the most attention to this area was given during the socialist period. The title of the book Architecture of Care refers to the phenomenon of spa culture on the territory of present-day Slovakia in the post-World War II period, but also to the contemporary perception of the body, regeneration, and lifestyle. The state invested significant resources; specialized institutions focusing on the specifics of spa treatment as well as spa urbanism and architecture emerged. As a result, unique constructions with elaborated spatial arrangements catering to the needs of spa visitors were realized.
The initiators of the entire project are the artistic group Abandoned (re)creation: photographer Andrea Kalinová and architect Martin Zaiček, who contributed photographs and expert text to the book. The editor of the book is Petra Hlaváčková, and the graphic design of the book was handled by Magdaléna Scheryová. From the beginning, photographer Peter Kuzmin also collaborated on the book. The book contains several other texts; in addition to the architectural study by Martin Zaiček, contributions were made by Zuzana Jakalová, Ivana Rumanová, and Jarmila Bencová. The oral history was collected by Barbora Németh.
The discussion will feature: Andrea Kalinová is a photographer and a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava.
