Venue: Experimental Space Roxy/NoD, Dlouhá 33, Prague 1 Organizer: KRUH Civic Association
The second evening organized by the Kruh association within the "We Abroad" cycle will be dominated by Mirko Baum, a respected Czech architect who gained significant standing particularly in Germany through his progressive work, where he moved in the 1970s. After the first lecture focused on the current generation of architects who are still gaining experience abroad, the cycle continues with the appearance of a personality from the older, already established generation abroad. Mirko Baum completed his studies at the end of the 1960s and at the beginning of the normalization period found a relatively creative and free shelter within the Liberec SIAL (Association of Engineers and Architects of Liberec), specifically at the SIAL kindergarten. The deteriorating political situation forced Baum to leave Czechoslovakia in 1973. He first worked in Cologne in the design office Werkgruppe 7. Later, he joined the studio of Josef P. Kleihues in Dülmen-Rorup. Since 1993, he has been a professor at the RWTH Aachen University, for which he designed an award-winning extension for the Faculty of Architecture. Mirko Baum is a highly technically oriented architect who has long focused on the theoretical aspects of the relationship between structure and form. These ideas are also reflected in his book of brilliant essays Streets at the End of the World/ Strasse am Ende der Welt (2008), which has received several awards for its graphic design as well. Mirko Baum will present his own work, his life experiences abroad, and certainly also his technical reflections, as suggested by the title, in Prague on the first Thursday in April.

The Kruh Civic Association has been organizing public events and lectures focused on contemporary issues in architecture since 2001. The aim of the lectures and discussions is to promote a dialogue about quality Czech and world architecture and architectural creation to broader layers of the public - i.e., even beyond a narrow circle of experts and architecture students. To date, Kruh has organized more than a hundred lectures by significant and emerging Czech and foreign architects and architectural theorists.
