The civic association Terra Madoda, as part of its long-term project OFFCITY in collaboration with the East Bohemian Gallery in Pardubice, has prepared a moderated panel discussion for the evening of July 20, 2010, with the central theme being URBAN CULTURAL SPACE.

We characterize urban cultural space as places within the organism of the city where "cultural activities" and "cultural services" take place. Their forms, relation to urbanism, and functional content can take unexpected forms, shifts, and innovations today.

The discussion with personalities from the art sector and architectural theorists should develop these possibilities and draw upon their rich experiences.

How can cultural space be defined?
Do established institutional models of cultural spaces meet contemporary demands?
Should urban cultural space be centralized or distributed?
What role should it play in the public space of the city?
Can the spectrum of urban cultural spaces be expanded with new economically feasible operations?
What should contemporary or future urban cultural space look like?

These are some of the questions we will attempt to answer together.

One of the motives for posing these questions and initiating this panel discussion is the fact that the City of Pardubice began working at the beginning of 2010 on the creation of a new strategic and conceptual material for cultural development. From ongoing discussions between city representatives and Pardubice cultural entities, it is already evident that there is an absence of relevant cultural space in the city. As part of the OFFCITY project, we have decided to explore this demand and offer a fresh perspective on cultural issues.

THEME:     CULTURAL SPACE
DATE:     July 20 – 24, 2010
PLACE:     House at Jonah, Pernštýnské náměstí 50, Pardubice

The workshop, to which professional architects have been invited, will take place as part of a more extensive project by the East Bohemian Gallery in Pardubice called LABORATORY no. 50, which focuses on revitalizing and exploring the space of the gallery in the House at Jonah, seeking overlaps between various artistic genres and investigating the connections and relationships between humans and space.

Invited architects will attempt to find and identify answers to questions regarding urban cultural space from July 20 to 24, 2010, which are not solely burdensome to Pardubice.

One of the goals of the workshop is to connect activities with other participants of the event, utilizing mutual synergy with the possibility of creating a joint final presentation. Workshop participants will be able to visit and observe other ongoing workshops within the allocated time.

The output of the workshop will be an exhibition held from August 11 to September 12, 2010, in the premises of the East Bohemian Gallery in Pardubice at the House at Jonah.
