Panelaci.cz – Research on the Architecture of Panel Apartment Complexes in the Czech Republic

The lecture will take place on Thursday, April 17, 2014, at 18:00 in the Antiquarian and Club Fiducia.

The phenomenon of panel buildings will be discussed by renowned Czech art historians Rostislav Švácha, Michaela Jehlíková Janečková, and Martin Strakoš.

Admission is voluntary.

The Panelaci.cz project aims to present panel apartment complexes in the Czech Republic not merely as a problematic part of the building stock, that is, as the infamous “rabbit hutches.” Its goal is to seriously and extensively process the phenomenon of panel apartment complexes in the Czech Republic for the first time. The research team, coordinated by the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, works according to individual regions, including the capital city of Prague, selecting several of the most important complexes from each region with an emphasis on today's regional cities. This team analyzes these complexes from various perspectives. The outputs will include architectural, urban, sociological, statistical assessments, as well as heritage preservation, landscape aspects, and so on. The outputs will include exhibitions in open spaces as well as in exhibition halls in regional cities, articles and scientific publications, educational programs, and contributions in the media. The project, planned until 2017 and supported by the Ministry of Culture as part of the Applied Research and Development Program for National and Cultural Identity (NAKI), will be presented during the lecture in Ostrava by Michaela Jehlíková Janečková, Rostislav Švácha, and Martin Strakoš.
