Mirko Baum

Architecture OS is organizing a lecture by Professor Mirko Baum titled

KIT OF PARTS
On Particulars and the Whole

Prof. Mirko Baum belongs to a generation of architects who tried to create in a time when conditions were not the most favorable. Nevertheless, he managed to assert himself not only in his home environment but also abroad after leaving then Czechoslovakia in 1974. In the 1960s, he became a member of SIAL. From an early age, he showed interest in the structural essence of architecture. Influenced by the HI-TECH movement, Fuller, the Archigram group, and J. Stirling, his works are based on the foundations of the most modern engineering and structural knowledge. It is therefore characteristic that in 1976 he became a member of the team around J. P. Kleihues, whose work was marked by similar principles.
For Mirko Baum, the theoretical essence of architecture is important; he seeks support for his concept within it. His rational view of architecture, his own opinion on construction and the theory of form is inscribed in his buildings, as can be verified in his book titled Streets at the End of the World. Among his most notable buildings is his own family house, the steel framework of the Carmelite Church in Frankfurt n. M., the Olympic ski jump in GAPA, the pedestrian and cyclist bridge in Hradec Králové, and last but not least, the new building of the Faculty of Architecture in Aachen. In 1993, he became a university professor at RWTH Aachen.

"With Baum, you know what it relies on. The acknowledgment that we are part of the cosmic order gives great strength for fundamental decisions. And then it's hard to be interested in whether that building is steel or stone. Those are not important things from the perspective of great distance." says Professor Emil Přikryl

We welcome Prof. Mirko Baum in the Chamber Hall at the Small Scene in Zlín on Thursday, November 21, 2013, at 7 p.m.
