Life in Architecture is a cycle of six lectures that presents architecture as an integral part of our lives. This year's cycle will focus on building architecture. More than on typology, it will address the cultural and social impact of architecture: Can architecture be activist? What should a public building represent? How should we treat cultural heritage, or how intimate can the relationship between an architect and an investor be?

Topics and speakers:

September 27: ACTIVE ARCHITECTURE
Igor Kovačević and Yvette Vašourková / CCEA - Center for Central European Architecture

October 11: THE DEMAND FOR PUBLIC MONUMENT CARE ACQUIRES SOCIALIST CHARACTER
Ladislav Zikmund-Lender / State heritage care nowadays means two - fundamentally opposing moments. The first arises when during the "season" we want to spend our free time on a cultural activity (and also spend quite a bit of money), the second when an owner wants to somehow intervene in a state-protected building. The first case of economic exploitation of predominantly residential sites is generally received positively by the public, the second case of limiting the owners' whims and often their malice is received quite negatively, often compared to the worst restrictions of totalitarian regimes. The lecture will focus on the current role and perception of state heritage care and will show its perspectives in the past and into the future.

October 25: CONCERT VS WALKMAN?
Jindřich Smetana / rector of UMPRUM / Reflection on theaters, arenas, and other gathering spaces.

November 8: DESACRALIZATION OF SOKOL HALLS
Rostislav Švácha / architectural historian / The architecture of Sokol halls from the last third of the 19th century resembles temples, as if Sokol exercises were fulfilling the function of a sacred ritual. The temple-like nature of the first Sokol halls is well expressed in the rhetoric of their descriptions in contemporary press. However, in the 1920s, a shift occurs and Sokol halls begin to resemble factories. The lecture will reach the question of whether this architectural transformation also reflected a change in the ideological content of Sokol exercises.

November 22: THE PLACE OF THE MONUMENT
Anežka Bartlová / Following the book Manual of the Monument (UMPRUM 2016) and the exhibition Place of the Monument (VI_PER, Prague 2016), the lecture will revolve around questions raised by debates on monuments and their place in contemporary society, the role of artwork in public space in connection with discussions about 1% for art, but it will also address how the relationship between the work and the place can either function or not.

December 6: ARCHITECTURE AND TERROR
Petr Rezek / When does an architect exceed his competence by entering the sphere of fear and horror? When does a builder exceed his position and turn an architect into a builder?

Tickets will be sold on-site. 6 lectures 350 CZK / students and seniors 250 CZK 1 lecture 100 CZK / students and seniors 50 CZK
