Life in Architecture is a series of six lectures that presents architecture as an integral part of our lives. This year's cycle will focus on the architecture of buildings. More than typology, it will address the cultural and social implications of architecture: Can architecture be activist? What should a public building represent? How should we treat cultural heritage, or how intimate can the relationship between the architect and the investor be?
Rostislav Švácha DESECRATION OF GYMS Tuesday, November 8, 2016 6:00 PM in the Stucco Hall of the Znojmo Society
The architecture of gymnasiums from the last third of the 19th century resembles temples, as if Sokol exercises also served the function of a sacred ritual. The temple-like nature of the first gymnasiums is well expressed in the rhetoric of their descriptions in period newspapers. However, in the 1920s, a turn occurs, and gymnasiums begin to resemble factories. The lecture will arrive at the question of whether this architectural transformation also corresponded to a change in the ideological content of Sokol exercises.
The series is organized by the Art to Znojmo association in collaboration with Original Regional Architecture (ORA) with financial support from the South Moravian Region, the Czech Architecture Foundation, and the city of Znojmo.
