A sophisticated and multifunctional attic that serves as a private refuge and a place for gatherings – a perfect mix of relaxation, nostalgia, and modern design. A combination of sunlight, thoughtful spatial design, and personalized elements. This is the transformation that a classic attic storage area of a family home from the 1970s underwent in Mokronog, Slovenia.

The family house long served more as a place of nostalgia, a reminder of times when the owners spent their childhood. However, under the supervision of architect Tina Hočevar, it was reconstructed and transformed into an ambitious modern object. As part of a comprehensive energy renovation of the entire house, a new roof was installed along with roof windows VELUX with external shading. Externally, the house remains loyal to the time of its origin, while the attic, through the illuminated approach of the architect, has become a design loft featuring libraries, a fireplace, and a sauna, illuminated by roof windows VELUX.

Architect and designer Tina Hočevar describes herself as a seeker of stories that touch you, speak to you, and stay with you. In her projects, she draws from the character of the given locality, combines respect for the past and tradition, considers the clients' wishes, and lets her experiences, knowledge, and inspiration speak. "I approach projects always in an original way, as I believe that only such an approach can survive in our fast-paced times of fleeting images and ideas,” says the graduate of the Faculty of Architecture in Ljubljana.

From storage to an ambitious vision

Before the reconstruction, the attic was a classic storage space for unwanted clutter. However, the owners’ vision for the attic modification exceeded the idea of just a living room: they desired plenty of shelves, a library, a cozy reading nook under the window, and a relaxation corner with a sauna. Architect Tina Hočevar carefully weighed the relationships and connections of the typical sloping roof of the attic, possible volumes of furniture, colors, and light. Through a thoughtful placement of the fireplace, cabinets, sauna, and tub, she created seamless transitions between the open communal space and the intimate spa zone. Cubic cabinets, strategically placed on the sides of the room, serve as functional storage spaces and display areas for books, artworks, and family souvenirs that add a personal dimension to the space.

The transforming power of light and color

Opening up to the roof with exposed wooden beams has lent the attic space a sense of airiness. The flow of natural daylight is maximized by large windows on the opposite sides of the eastern and western gable façades. Roof windows VELUX, strategically added during the roof renovation, opened the path for natural sunlight to flood the center of the layout. The light brings a sense of openness into the room and enhances the spatial impression, particularly above the tub, where the electric roof window VELUX allows daylight to enter, as well as fresh air when ventilating the humid environment. Installed external shading prevents overheating of the interior.

The color palette reflects the personalities of the owners, with vibrant, bright shades of purple and teal in the main living area and a calmer green in the hot tub space. The architect herself is open about her fondness for the color green. The chosen tones harmonize with the natural light and create a relaxing atmosphere throughout the attic. The materials used in the renovation are simple yet striking, with colored panels that highlight the volume of the space and cast shadows that enhance the sense of depth and texture.
