Winners of the competition for the Modern Timber Building of the Year 2011

The absolute winner of the public voting and the winner of the expert jury evaluation is the Kindergarten Skalníkova in Mariánské Lázně, Ecomodula s.r.o. www.ecomodula.com

The building was designed as a replacement for the original pavilion-type kindergarten building, which was in a state of disrepair and had extremely high operating costs.
The construction of the kindergarten had to exclude the use of DP3 type structures. The most common requirement for fire resistance was REI 15 DP2, EI 15 DP2 due to the single-story building. Each classroom had to form a separate fire section. Safe and cost-effective constructions with high fire resistance could be created from Rigidur fiberboard.

The designed building is very compact, considering the intention of an energy-efficient building; it essentially represents a single-story rectangular building with a flat roof.
The building contains six classrooms, two bedrooms, a kitchen, a dining room, offices, and other service areas and technical facilities. The quality of the internal microclimate is ensured by a controlled ventilation system and warm air heating with heat recovery from exhaust air.

The building is positioned so that the entrance and the delivery entrance align axially with the entrance area created for the existing kindergarten building. The building is intentionally shifted closer to the mentioned northern boundary of the property, thus freeing up the southern sunny area of the garden. The garden is designed as clearly defined and therefore controllable safe space for children's activities. The solution of external areas includes necessary greenery.

The winning family house is a non-basement, two-story building with three shed roofs.
The house consists of three architecturally connected masses. The first object is a garage, the second is the family house, and the third mass consists of the winter garden and study rooms.
The layout of the house is spread over two floors. The ground floor contains the social zone of the house – a living room, dining room, kitchenette, winter garden. There are also sanitary facilities and a technical room. The attic contains a relaxation zone with bedrooms and sanitary facilities.

The house is oriented according to the northeastern edge of the plot. The main entrance is from the northeast, the garage entrance from the southeast, and the sunny terrace to the southwest.
The source of heat for heating and hot water preparation is a condensing gas boiler. Hot water is prepared in an integrated indirect heating tank. Ventilation is ensured in rooms with windows directly, while bathrooms are ventilated artificially using fans.

The building is founded on a concrete slab and foundation strips. The structure of the outer walls of the residential part is made of a diffusion-open ALFADIFU system, while the garage outer wall is made of the ALFAPLUS system. The interior load-bearing walls and ceiling structures are also made of prefabricated sandwich panels with Rigidur construction fiberboards.
