Workshop Assignment: The Museum of Totality in Uherské Hradiště The former prison building in Uherské Hradiště, constructed alongside the judicial palace between 1891-1897, is a cultural monument. It comprises a set of buildings in close proximity to the historical center of the city. Currently, the building is unused; part of the complex (the judicial palace) houses a secondary art school. The city and the district court are interested in the property. The significance of this object lies not only in its urban aspect. It serves as a significant memento (and the best-preserved object) that recalls the era of Nazi and communist terror. The aim of the assignment is to propose a reconstruction and completion of this building so that it meets many (sometimes contradictory) demands of the municipality and its citizens.
Jury Assessment: A completely unconventional concept of reducing the existing building to a monumental architectural act. The resulting architecture does not express totalitarian oppression through overt symbolism but opens the visitor's imagination through personal experience. The original corridors are lined with empty door openings from the missing cells, serving as a reminder of the emptiness present in the act of limiting human freedom. A Stalker-like atmosphere.
