The Brno-south district selected a proposal according to which the broader center of Komárov will be transformed

Brno - The wider center of Komárov in the Brno-south district will be transformed according to the design by the atelier gogolák + grasse. The first place in the urban planning competition was awarded to the Prague office primarily for its sensitive integration of new development with the original one and its natural ability for gradual development and construction in the area. This was stated today by Deputy Mayor Jakub Holas (STAN). The city hall aims to transform the area considering it faces many challenges, such as dense traffic, noise pollution, and a lack of quality public spaces.

The competition was announced by the city district in May. Out of 22 registered ateliers with international participation, the jury selected five teams in June that developed their proposals. The best, according to the jury, was presented by the atelier gogolák + grasse. "It proposes local centers in the form of small squares, responding to the original structure. With sensitively chosen scales of public spaces and the proposed buildings, it creates natural transitions between old and new structures, thereby effectively connecting these disparate parts. The proposal also emphasizes safe and logical connections between pedestrian, cycling, public, and individual transport and introduces new transportation links,” said Holas.

The process began in February with a participatory phase, during which representatives of the city district gathered residents' opinions on how they use the space, what they like about it, and what they would like to change. The current form of the area is primarily shaped by insensitive interventions from the communist era in the form of monumental residential buildings and traffic arteries that divide the area. The region serves as a transportation hub with minimal options for spending leisure time. Several thousand people live in Komárov.

Now, the city hall will collaborate with the competition winner to develop a more detailed study. The feedback from the city district and other involved parties must be incorporated into the authors' proposal so that the study can serve as a relevant and broadly accepted basis for further development of the area. People could expect smaller changes that do not require a building permit by the end of next year, while larger adjustments will be a matter for the coming years, the deputy mayor added.
