Liberec - In Liberec, the demolition of the last building of the former textile factory Textilana ended today after two weeks. Ondřej Paclt, spokesperson for the company Syner, which was responsible for the demolition, informed ČTK about it. The multi-story spinning mill, also known by the name Blaupunkt, partially collapsed on January 27 and posed a threat to the surrounding area. The demolition of the remaining part was ordered by a structural engineer.

The building, which was about 60 meters long, over 20 meters wide, and nearly 30 meters high, was gradually dismantled by workers from the Liberec construction company with the help of a demolition excavator. "We had to proceed carefully due to neighboring buildings and the communication, to avoid damage," stated Paclt.

According to him, the rubble from the building was not taken away anywhere. "We were removing the emergency condition," added Paclt. The site belongs to the Middle Europe Investments (MEI) group. Its intention is to transform this neglected area near the lower center into a vibrant city. However, these are just plans for now. The new neighborhood is expected to offer housing in green surroundings.

For the previous two centuries, a textile factory was located in this place, employing up to 3000 people during its peak. The oldest building was a dyehouse from 1806, and the textile factory experienced significant growth from the second half of the 19th century thanks to the Liebieg family. After nationalization, it was known as Textilana and was the largest manufacturer of woolen fabrics in the country even at the beginning of the 90s. Production ended in 2001 when Textilana went bankrupt in private ownership. The nine-hectare site has not had any use since then, and none of the presented plans have been successfully implemented.

Almost all buildings, including the eighty-meter factory chimney on the site, were demolished about 20 years ago. Only the building of the former spinning mill on Mlýnská street remains, which is currently being demolished. It had long been unused and was in very poor technical condition because of that. It was a rundown building without windows, where homeless people occasionally stayed. Two of them died inside last Christmas in a fire. The partial collapse of the building at the end of this January occurred without injuries; no one was inside at that time.
