Třinec - Today, after reconstruction, the municipal cinema Kosmos opened in Třinec in the Frýdek-Místek region. The modernization, which was the largest investment project of the city in the last decade, cost nearly 124 million crowns. The project also included the restoration of the cinema's atypical cable roof. This was announced to journalists by Petra Martynková from the Třinec city hall.
"Kosmos cinema is one of the rare examples of Czechoslovak modernist architecture. At the time of its opening in 1968, it was the most modern cinema in the Czech Republic. The reconstruction has returned its original appearance while equipping it with top-notch technologies of the 21st century," said Martynková.
Part of the overall modernization of the cinema was the restoration of the roof suspended on 78 steel cables. The repair of the roof was the most technically demanding part of the reconstruction. Initially, the city had trouble finding designers willing to undertake the project.
"We approached the reconstruction of the Kosmos cinema with courage and humility. With courage because we replaced the original plan to only repair the damaged roof with a vision of complete modernization that returns the cinema to its original face and prepares it for another 50 years of service to the city. And with humility towards the work of the architects who designed such a bold building in the 1960s that the contemporary press stated that such a cinema doesn't even exist in Prague," said Mayor Věra Palkovská (Personalities for Třinec).
In addition to the repaired roof, the cinema is insulated and has new building cladding. There is also air conditioning with recovery, reconstructed acoustics in the auditorium, and updated projection technology. "The old digital projector has been replaced with a modern one that delivers brilliant images to viewers and provides the cinema with operational cost savings. The perfect visual experience is complemented by a surround sound system. Thanks to a network of 48 new speakers and precisely tuned acoustics of the hall, Kosmos cinema ranks among the technological top of Czech single-screen cinemas," said Martynková. She added that after the reconstruction, the building should also have more economical operational costs.
In addition to the cinema, the city also had the area in front of the building renovated. The newly created space will be available for cultural and social events. The repair of the municipal cinema lasted a year and a half, and the city funded it from its own budget.
