Třinec (Frýdecko-Místecko) – In Třinec, the reconstruction of the city’s cinema Kosmos from the 1960s is starting. The renovation will last a year and the city will pay over 101 million crowns for the repairs. This was announced to the journalists by Petra Martynková from the Třinec city council.
The modernization includes the renovation of the roof suspended on 78 cables, but also the adjustment of public spaces and the redigitalization of the cinema. "The modernization of this architectural gem from 1968 dedicated to film, culture, entertainment, and education is a key investment project of this year," said Martynková.
According to Mayor Věra Palkovská (Individuals for Třinec), the cinema is an architectural jewel of the city. It hosts around 900 film screenings annually, attracting up to 75,000 visitors. "Třinec, although a young city, certainly deserves to protect and emphasize the uniqueness of its buildings. However, it must be recognized that every uniqueness comes at a cost, and the modernization will be demanding both structurally and financially," said Palkovská.
Cinema Kosmos was inaugurated on February 25, 1968. The original building was designed by Bratislava architects Ladislav Bořuta and Alois Dařich. The cinema hall's roof is a technical unique made by statician and expert on self-supporting cable roofs Jozef Poštulka. In former Czechoslovakia, similar structural solutions can only be found at the swimming stadium in České Budějovice and the sports hall in Bratislava.
"The requirement not to disrupt the original character of the building was the most significant demand in preparing the reconstruction. Ultimately, seven teams of experts from various professions worked on the project documentation, striving to return the building to its clean form of the 1960s and free it from the layers of insensitive modifications made since the 1990s. The construction of the new cable roof, unique in its kind, will be technically challenging, as up to 78 pre-tensioning cables will shape it. For the time being, the cinema will receive a new temporary roof that will protect the open structure from adverse weather during the reconstruction," said Martynková.
In addition to the reconstruction of the cable roof, the project also includes the replacement of acoustic panels and ceilings that are inadequate, and their reinstallation would be uneconomical. The electrical installation, lighting, air conditioning, and heat recovery will also be new. The cinema will have new technical equipment worth eight million crowns. Cinema Kosmos has been among the top ten most visited single-screen cinemas in the Czech Republic for the past five years.
