The plot of land in a newly emerging villa neighborhood on the outskirts of Bratislava has a gentle slope to the east and a view of the forests to the south. The architectural concept of the house is simple - everything important that happens in the house has contact with the southern exterior and the horizon of the garden. The central position of the living area (with a height of six meters) and the separate kitchen is surrounded to the north by the technological spaces of the house, to the east by the bedroom and study, and to the west by the garage. On the upper floor, there are two guest rooms with sanitary facilities. It is a given that the benefits of energy-efficient construction are an integral part of architectural thinking and the foundation of every concept at the Pokorny architects' studio. However, the house is far from the soulless linear "box with windows to the south" thanks to its sophisticated design solutions. The southern facade is entirely covered by a three-meter deep porch providing a fully-fledged covered space at the boundary between the interior and the garden. At the point where the porch meets the kitchen and dining area, the porch is up to six meters deep, and its glass roof serves as a light diffuser directly opposite the main entrance to the house from the north side. The exterior glass roof has upper roller shading and ventilation fields. The six-meter-high audio space is secondarily lit in a basilical manner, so despite the deep porch to the south, the living space is not deprived of natural light; the elimination of direct sunlight is a welcome architectural and constructional effect. A decisive element forming the basic feeling in the house is the joint decision of the architect and the investors to build the entire house as a prefabricated wooden structure. The Lignotrend construction system with an integrated acoustic ceiling finished in natural solid oak and natural light creates excellent acoustics and an unparalleled atmosphere in the house. The surface treatment of the facades is in white plaster and Canadian cedar. The microclimate is enriched with a bio-pond at the contact point with the porch and the garden. The source of heat and cooling is provided by two geothermal boreholes. The house has underfloor heating and wall cooling. It is excellent news that the house operates remarkably well even without technology, using passive elements, as was evident during the construction in the summer months when the house had an exceptionally pleasant climate even without the involvement of technology thanks to passive shading and cross ventilation through the chimney.
