The Department of Architecture UMPRUM presents the lecture series Infrastructure of Architectural Discourse, in which both foreign and Czech guests will lecture on what "contemporary architecture" is and how its image is shaped, who and how determines which themes are considered relevant, how they are interpreted, and how they enter public debate. In the first lecture on the topic of Exhibitions on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, curators and architects Jerome Becker and Matthias Moroder, who lead the independent gallery MAGAZIN in Vienna, will speak.
The lecture series, curated by Karolína Plášková, aims to introduce and critically reflect on the functioning of architectural discourse through the media and formats in which architecture is presented – institutions, exhibitions, publishing and educational platforms, or audiovisual media. Emphasis is placed on questions of visibility and representation: what types of projects and themes are currently emphasized, who has the opportunity to formulate them, and what value frameworks accompany them.
All lectures take place in the cinema at the Technology Center UMPRUM at Mikulandská 134/5. The events are freely accessible to the public and will be held in English (foreign lecturers) or Czech (Czech lecturers): April 15, 2026, at 7:00 PM Exhibitions – Jerome Becker & Matthias Moroder: MAGAZIN – Space for Contemporary Architecture (AT) April 22, 2026, at 7:00 PM AV Media – Alžběta Žabová & Petr Bureš: Speaking Objects (CZ) April 27, 2026, at 7:00 PM Publishing – María Mazzanti: VOLUME (NL) April 29, 2026, at 7:00 PM Institutions – Mariann Drell: Estonian Centre for Architecture (EE)
“In the field of exhibitions, we are interested in curatorial strategies and the ways in which architecture communicates its arguments through space and media. MAGAZIN represents a model of a smaller, independent institution that operates outside traditional museum structures yet actively engages in international architectural discourse,” says curator Karolína Plášková about the lecture series. Lecturers Jerome Becker and Matthias Moroder will present their curatorial concept, the process of selecting exhibitors and themes, and considerations regarding exhibition design.
MAGAZIN is a non-profit exhibition space for contemporary architecture in Vienna. It was founded in March 2018 and is currently led by Jerome Becker and Matthias Moroder. MAGAZIN presents the work of local and international architects in the form of solo exhibitions specifically prepared for its spaces, which are accompanied by lectures and discussions. The exhibition program focuses on a wide range of diverse architectural approaches that challenge normative ideas about the architectural profession. MAGAZIN aims to highlight projects that fall outside the framework of commercial architectural production and supports their development by funding the creation of new works.
