At UMPRUM, architect and editor María Mazzanti will present the architecture and design magazine VOLUME as a publishing platform. The lecture is part of the series Infrastructure of Architectural Discourse, organized by the Department of Architecture at UMPRUM, which addresses "contemporary architecture" and the shaping of its image. The lecture series aims to introduce and critically reflect on the functioning of architectural discourse through the media and formats in which architecture is presented – institutions, exhibitions, publishing and educational platforms, or audiovisual media. Emphasis is placed on questions of visibility and representation: what types of projects and themes are currently emphasized, who has the opportunity to articulate them, and what value frameworks accompany them. In the field of publishing, we are interested in the ways architecture is mediated through various textual and publishing formats – from magazines and online platforms to books and zines – and how these forms influence its interpretation and reception. We are intrigued by how topics and authorship are selected, what types of texts and approaches publishing allows, and how individual media engage with their audience. We also observe the relationship of these media to the broader ecosystem of architectural discourse and what conditions – including funding – shape their functioning. VOLUME is a printed magazine about architecture and design, published by Archis in collaboration with the Dutch Nieuwe Instituut since 2023. The magazine combines its own publishing activities with research and programs of the Nieuwe Instituut while maintaining editorial independence. Archis is an international non-profit organization focused on architecture and related fields, organizing interdisciplinary research projects resulting in publications and events, in collaboration with an extensive network of individuals, institutions, and research organizations. Archis seeks to formulate new or progressive agendas for space by connecting global perspectives and experiences with the cultural, social, and political significance of architecture.
María Mazzanti is an architect, researcher, editor, and educator based in Amsterdam. She is also developing a research project in Barranquilla, Colombia, where she examines the interconnectedness of waterways, urban infrastructure, and seasonal flash floods through ecofeminist perspectives.
The lecture series is curated by Karolína Plášková, organized by the Department of Architecture at UMPRUM, and takes place within the course Current Trends in Architectural Creation (STAT).
