On the Emerging Logics of Generative AI
We can say that we live in a new era of planetary design supported by ubiquitous computers. Ecological and smart cities are just the most visible manifestations of this new "generative" situation. This lecture will address how design is currently changing due to new biological, financial, and informational technologies and how new ideas about "generative" technologies and environments are changing the aesthetics, politics, and economics of our present.
Orit Halpern is a professor and chair of the Department of Digital Cultures at the Technical University of Dresden. Her research focuses on the history of cybernetics, design, politics, and artificial intelligence. She is the author of two books, The Smartness Mandate (MIT Press 2023) and Beautiful Data: A History of Vision and Reason since 1945 (Duke Press 2015). She is currently working on two projects. The first deals with the history of decision-making automation, reactive politics, and freedom, while the second explores the history of experimentation on a planetary scale in the fields of design, science, and engineering.
