Is the fate of cultural activities in the Ostrava Bauhaus indifferent to you? Join us for the happening "Relay for Bauhaus" on Wednesday, February 28, from 4:00 PM, starting in front of the New Town Hall at Prokeš Square in the center of Ostrava. Literature, art, performance—all in support of the unique place we love. The happening will have four stops from the town hall to the Bauhaus, with participation from a number of Ostrava artists as we kick off our call that the Bauhaus does not have to end, symbolically handing over the "relay baton" to Mayor Jan Dohnal. At the same time, we will present him with a timeline we have prepared for the city, offering solutions on how the city could proceed in the area around the Bauhaus and the adjacent slaughterhouse. Our call to the city councilors of Ostrava has been signed by over 2,000 people and more than 100 significant personalities from Czech culture, representatives of cultural organizations, and schools. The call can be signed until February 27, 2024. Why are we striving to ensure that current activities remain in the Bauhaus until the city has the results of the urban planning competition for the location and a specific plan for the site where the Bauhaus currently stands? The city slaughterhouse has reached the finals of the most prestigious European architectural award, the Mies van der Rohe Award. It is the only building in the Czech Republic to ever advance to the finals. This is a tremendous success for Ostrava. Just because international attention is now focused on Ostrava, we should have a well-prepared plan for how to proceed in the entire area around the slaughterhouse and the adjacent Bauhaus. Thoughtless steps could harm both the entire area and especially the city slaughterhouse and its perception. Our initiative is now preparing a proposal for a specific timeline on how to proceed with the Bauhaus issue so that the area develops systematically.
Why did our call arise? The former Bauhaus DIY store, with an area of almost 5,000 m2 in the center of Ostrava, is used by the PLATO contemporary art gallery for educational and community programs. The Bauhaus has become an award-winning community center of European style and a prime example of how to meaningfully revitalize a brownfield. However, the city leadership of Ostrava has decided to end current activities in the Bauhaus by June 30, 2024, without revealing any intentions regarding what will happen to the building and the space afterward. What will happen to the Bauhaus after July 1? The city has yet to release a specific plan. Will it become an empty space, a dilapidated area, and another peripheral site? Non-systematic steps could significantly harm not only the entire area but especially the neighboring city slaughterhouse, which is now receiving one architectural award after another (it is located only 70 meters from the Bauhaus). The call addressed to the mayor and members of the City Council of Ostrava is a request to reconsider the city's intention to end current activities in the Bauhaus by June 30, 2024, and to maintain these activities until the results of the urban planning competition for the given location are known and a specific plan for the future form of the site where the Bauhaus currently stands is outlined. The chosen form of public appeal responds to the city leadership's statement from the January council meeting that the public is not interested in continuing activities in the Bauhaus since no petition has been created. The public can join the call with their signature until February 27, 2024. The following day, the call will be presented to Mayor Jan Dohnal at the city hall on Prokeš Square. The act of presenting the call will also initiate the happening "Relay for Bauhaus" and provide the first opportunity for the media to meet the initiators of the call in person. Representatives of the initiative will also personally attend the city council meeting in Ostrava on March 27, 2024.
