Honorary Mention for New Construction of a Family House in Polom

Tomáš Bindr, Lucie Mohylová, HIP Vojtěch Šimčík, Atelier 38, realization 2014 trio of birch groups Lubomír Rychtar (nomination 14)

Nomination No. 15 was assessed outside the regular evaluation because the owner of the building is a member of the organizers of the J. M. Olbrich Award.
In the public voting poll, the most sympathy was received by nomination No. 9 - the family house in Vítkov, which was designed by Ing. arch. Petr Mlýnek, Atelier Zóna.

The jury finds promising the fact that among the best realizations, new young local creators-architects are beginning to emerge, returning to the Opava region after their studies and practice. At the same time, the greater insight and ambitions of local builders are also evidenced by the representation of great architects operating completely outside the region. Both of these phenomena would benefit the local scene, which has long been dominated by only a few strong creative personalities.

It is commendable to include new sculptural realizations in public space in the nominations. The Opava region thus finds itself in the context of other regions in the Czech Republic, where, after a long pause, artistic works are once again being placed in public spaces. However, these efforts in Opava also suffer from unnecessary shortcomings stemming from the lack of experience among investors in preparing similar tasks, underestimating the complexity required, and giving up on the possibility of gaining a broader perspective by comparing multiple ideas through organizing artistic competitions among several authors.

The Opava J. M. Olbrich Award has been awarded by the Association Za Opavu since 2007. Every year, the award for new construction alternates with the award for reconstruction for realizations carried out in the Opava region during the previous period. By awarding the Opava J. M. Olbrich Award, we intend to draw attention to interesting examples. The main aim of the J. M. Olbrich Award is to emphasize the role of architecture in the life of individuals and society, to stimulate discussion about it, to cultivate taste, and to provide instructive confrontations.

This year, the expert jury decided to award the prize for new constructions certified in 2013-2014.
The five-member expert jury (two members apologized) evaluated a total of 15 nominations, which included two apartment buildings, seven family houses, as well as three sculptural realizations in public space. Among the public fund constructions were the municipal office in Dobroslavice and a garden in Hranice nad Moravicí.

For this year's edition, the following members were appointed to the expert jury:
Ing. arch. Milena Vitoulová, architect
Mgr. Martin Strakoš, art historian and heritage conservation expert
Ing. arch. MgA. Osamu Okamura, architect and guarantor of the architecture magazine ERA 21
prof. akad. soch. Jan Ambrůz, head of the Sculpture Studio at FaVU VUT in Brno
Ing. arch. Lucie Langerová, architect and head of the heritage conservation department of MMO
Ing. arch. Tomáš Pilař, architect
MgA. Vendula Šafářová, PhD., architect

Members of the evaluation jury, architect Vendula Šafářová and architect Tomáš Pilař, were excused and did not participate in the evaluation for time reasons.
