The Opava Prize J. M. Olbrich has been awarded by the civic association Za Opavu since 2007. Each year, the awarding of the prize for new construction alternates with the prize for reconstruction, which have been realized in the Opava region during the respective period.
The main purpose of the Opava Prize is to emphasize the role of architecture in the life of individuals and society, to stimulate debate about it, cultivate taste, and bring educational confrontations. By nominating specific buildings for the Opava Prize J. M. Olbrich, we aim to draw attention to interesting examples and we reward the best ones with its award.
This year, the expert jury decided on the award for new construction completed in the years 2011-2012. The jury evaluated nine nominated buildings. Eight of them are family homes and one is a utility, technical building. Compared to previous years, we can state an increased interest in the overall spatial context in which the specific building takes place. Awareness of living in quality architecture has increased, and the demands of investors have risen. There is a prevailing interest in simply well-thought-out spaces with an emphasis on the intimate connection between interior and exterior, which, given family housing, plays an increasingly significant role. Overall, it can be stated that all nominated buildings are of high quality and demonstrate an effort to contribute to the quality of local architecture and the environment.
