Brno - A total of 39 artists registered for the art competition to create a sculpture of the Moravian spiritual patrons Saints Cyril and Methodius in Brno. CTK was informed today by the spokesperson of the Brno bishopric, Martina Jandlová. The sculpture of the apostles will stand by the cathedral on Mount Petrov. It will be unveiled in 2013 during the celebrations of the 1150th anniversary of their arrival in Great Moravia. "The interest among artists is quite significant, which we are pleased with. They could register until December 19 of last year. They are now sending us their proposals," the spokesperson added. According to her, the goal of the bishopric will be to collect them by spring and then select the winning design. The bishopric has given artists a free hand. Therefore, artistic proposals that consider creating a memorial instead of a sculpture of the saints can also be submitted to the competition. The idea for creating the memorial came from the Brno bishop Vojtěch Cikrle. "Establishing a memorial to the Moravian spiritual patrons in the Moravian metropolis has been his long-standing goal, with Petrov being the most dignified location for placing the memorial as the city's dominant feature," Jandlová added. The anniversary of the arrival of Cyril and Methodius in Great Moravia, where they brought Christianity, the script, and Slavic liturgy, will be connected to numerous celebrations in Moravia in two years. The participation of Pope Benedict XVI is also expected. He previously visited Moravia in 2009, when 120,000 believers attended the service with him in Brno-Tuřany.
