Brno - The Moravian spiritual patrons Saints Cyril and Methodius will have a memorial near the cathedral on the Brno hill Petrov. It will be unveiled in 2013 on the occasion of the 1150th anniversary of their arrival in Great Moravia. This was announced today by the spokesperson of the Brno diocese, Martina Jandlová.

In recent days, the diocese has announced an art competition for the design of the memorial. It will most likely be a sculpture of the saints. However, this is not specified in the competition conditions. The diocese wants to give artists the opportunity to come up with bolder designs as well. The results of the competition are expected to be known later this year. Construction could then start next year.
The idea to create a memorial for the apostles was initiated by the Brno bishop Vojtěch Cikrle. "The establishment of a memorial to the Moravian spiritual patrons in the Moravian metropolis has been his long-term goal, with Petrov, as the city’s landmark, being the most dignified place for the memorial’s installation," added Jandlová.
The anniversary of the arrival of Cyril and Methodius in Great Moravia, where they brought Christianity, literacy, and Slavic liturgy, will be associated with numerous celebrations in Moravia in two years. The participation of Pope Benedict XVI is also expected. He visited Moravia two years ago when 120,000 believers attended a service with him in Brno-Tuřany.
