Prague - The Prague Public Transport Company (DPP) will announce an international architectural competition for a cable car that is set to connect Podbaba with Bohnice in the future. This was reported today in a press release by the company's spokesperson Aneta Řehková. According to her, the terms of the competition will be published by DPP no later than May 9, and interested parties will be able to apply until the end of the month. The results should be known in August. The cable car aims to provide direct connection between Prague 8 and Prague 6 until the planned tram line is built.
The competition will determine the design of three stations and five supporting structures for the planned route. "So far, it was only clear which way the cable car would go, how high above the Vltava River and the terrain it would travel, but we will only find out how the entire structure will aesthetically impact the surroundings now. It still holds that the cable car is the fastest possible way to sufficiently connect Prague 6 with Prague 8 through Troja, although this project still faces a demanding permitting process," said Adam Scheinherr, Deputy Mayor of Prague for Transport (Prague Yours).
The competition will be in two rounds, where the jury will first select five advancing participants from the submitted portfolios, who will then develop competition designs by the end of July. The jurors will select the winner in August. The chair of the jury will be Arjan Dingsté, head of the Amsterdam studio UNStudio, and it will also include German designer Christiane Bausback as well as Czech experts such as Dalibor Hlaváček, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at ČVUT, designer Henrieta Nezpěváková, architect Patrik Kotas, and designer Ivan Němec. Additionally, representatives from DPP, the city, and the affected municipal districts will also sit on the jury.
On the more than two-kilometer route, the city plans stations Podbaba, Troja, and Bohnice. The cabins will have a capacity of 35 people and will be capable of transporting up to 2000 people in one direction per hour. Its goal is to ensure connection between Prague 6 and Prague 8, which are relatively close by air, but no direct connection exists, requiring people to travel through the center. In the long term, the city plans to connect the tram line with a new bridge in Troja; however, this is likely to happen in several decades.
