Modifications to Outdoor Spaces and Furniture in the Spořilov Housing Estate in Frýdek-Místek
studio first year: Ing.arch. MgA. Petr Šmídek and Ing.arch. Jiří Žid

The residents' association of the Spořilov housing estate in Frýdek-Místek reached out to Czech architectural schools to see if any of them would like to participate in the revitalization process of their home. The Liberec School of Architecture was the only one to respond to the initiative, and at the beginning of the winter semester, an introductory workshop took place on site (October 8 - 11, 2012), where students met with local residents, city representatives, and presented their intentions to the media.
Our school, thanks to a small number of students, can respond flexibly, spontaneously, and experiment to a much greater extent than established techniques with hundreds of students. In this case, first-year students were thrown into real life and addressed specific problems of the residents of a housing estate on the opposite end of the country.
In the first half of the semester, they analyzed the housing estate as a whole to determine its problems and needs, to then resolve outdoor furniture in detail in the second half of the semester.

Marie Štefanová (1st year) - Communal Table
A communal 8-meter long table where gatherings with tea, coffee, books, chess games, barbecues, outdoor celebrations, flea and other markets, neighborhood meetings, or other community or individual activities of the residents of the small Spořilov housing estate in Frýdek-Místek can take place. A sturdy wooden table stands on a small square paved with bricks in the lower part of the "courtyard" (overlooking the playground in its upper part). The sidewalks and car paths in Spořilov are also newly paved with bricks. The pavement always has a different bond for pedestrians and cars and separates them only in this way without height differences.

Eliška Málková (1st year) - After Hanging
The first part of the project focuses on making the act of hanging laundry a comfortable activity for everyone. This is primarily assisted by differently high hanging areas and spaces for baskets or clothespins. The second (and more important) part addresses the time after hanging. Benches, the fragrance of laundry, and surrounding greenery provide a pleasant environment for relaxation or play. Seniors can use the time to establish new contacts, converse, or read books. Children can have fun on the iron structure, adjacent stairs, or nearby playground.
