Zlín – The city of Zlín knows the winner of the architectural competition for the gradual reconstruction of the castle in the city center. The proposal by the architect Pavel Mudřík, in collaboration with architect Martina Gábor, came closest to the jury's visions, spokesperson for the Zlín city hall Tomáš Melzer said in a press release today. The repairs will most likely be carried out while operating and in phases.
The commission selected from only three proposals. "The winning design by Pavel Mudřík was undoubtedly the most developed and also dealt best with the operational schemes of the castle. At the same time, we are convinced that the reconstruction of the castle is approached sensitively and in some aspects refers to the architectural concept of architect Leopold Bauer from 1904 to 1905, from the period of the last conceptual renovation of the castle. We also appreciate the emphasis on quality craftsmanship in the castle," said Pavel Brada (ANO), Deputy Mayor of Zlín. According to him, the main goal of the reconstruction is to make the castle, as the oldest building in the city, a cultural and social heart of the city.
The evaluation committee appreciated that the winning proposal brings new impulses to the atrium and interiors. The ground floor will be used for a restaurant, café, pastry shop, and artisan bakery, and possibly a chocolate factory will also be located there. "According to the proposal, the second floor contains exhibition spaces, representative social spaces, appropriate facilities, a music hall, and educational spaces. The history museum of the city of Zlín is located on the third floor. The attic is designed for administrative spaces, for example for the Office of the City Architect, as well as other city departments, including a lecture hall with a capacity of approximately 60 seats," the spokesperson stated.
"The winning conceptual design should now be developed into a more detailed study, to which not only the city as the owner of the building will respond, but also existing and future users of the building. A key role will be played by heritage preservation, for which the castle is a monument of primary importance," said Ivo Tuček, head of the city's spatial planning department.
The city's budget should cover the replacement of electrical installations, flooring, or the repair of water and sewer systems. The city has already obtained grants for the replacement of windows and doors, and will try to obtain additional grants for other parts of the reconstruction, such as refurbishing the entrance gates, repairing chimneys or the façade.
