Plzeň - Plzeň plans to announce an open architectural-landscape competition in December, which aims to give a new shape to Míru Square in the Bory district. The competition conditions have been approved by the municipal council and still need to be ratified by the city councilors. The results of the competition should be known by the middle of next year. The winning team will then develop complete project documentation, including author's supervision. The process will also include a public presentation of all submitted proposals, said Pavel Bosák (Pirates), the technical deputy mayor of Plzeň.

"Míru Square does not function today as we would like it to. We want to create a space where people can meet, have a coffee, play with their children, or simply relax. We would like people not just to pass through but to stop here, experience the stories of the place, and feel that the space belongs to them," he stated. The new shape of the square is expected to bring more greenery, more pleasant conditions in summer, and a space that will serve every day.

Míru Square is one of the most significant public spaces in Bory and the Southern Suburb. Local residents have contributed to the planned renewal, and their suggestions played a significant role in preparing the competition brief. People most often requested a water feature, a café or a snack stall, more greenery, and shaded areas suitable for meetings.

The upcoming one-round anonymous competition will be open to all qualified teams. The city will sign a contract with the winner for further study development and preparation for implementation. "The square is surrounded by quality buildings, and there is a unique space, but it lacks atmosphere. Currently, it is more of an area that people pass through than a place where they want to stay. The competition is a great opportunity to fully utilize the potential of the place and give it new life. It has the potential to become one of the most pleasant squares in Plzeň," added Irena Vostracká, the director of the Planning and Development Department of the city of Plzeň.

Míru Square was created at the end of the 19th century as a botanical garden and still retains the character of an open urban park. Currently, it mainly serves as a transit corridor and a transfer hub for public transport. The new solution aims to offer comfortable pedestrian routes, places for rest and gatherings, water features, public restrooms, modern furniture, and a clear information system. The proposal will also include measures for rainwater management.
