Prague - The second city district has announced a contract for the project of a multifunctional building on Bělehradská Street. This follows information published in the public procurement bulletin. The estimated value of the project is 18 million crowns, while the estimated construction costs amount to half a billion crowns. The building is planned to replace the current single-story supermarket and will be primarily designated for municipal rental housing.

The new multifunctional building is set to have 35 apartments intended for municipal housing on the third to seventh floors. At the same time, the building will also offer a section with a commercial passage and space for a supermarket. The second above-ground floor will be reserved for administrative offices. There are also plans for two underground garages. The complex will include a garden area. The city hall anticipates the construction to begin in the years 2027 to 2028.

Several other city districts also plan to construct residential buildings. Prague 14 has started construction in two cases, and specific projects are also being prepared by Prague 6, 7, and 12. Other city halls are planning construction as well, which concerns Prague 4, 8, and 11.

In recent years, Prague has been facing a housing crisis caused by high housing prices. Privatization after 1991 reduced the municipal fund by more than 80 percent, from the original number of about 194,000 apartments to the current 30,000. The city management aims to increase the number of apartments again to ensure affordable housing, for example, for people in difficult social situations or representatives of essential professions for the functioning of the metropolis. Local councils decide on the apartments entrusted to the city districts independently.
