Praha 7 selected the design of the new school Jan Vodňanský in the competition.

Prague – Prague 7 has a winner of the architectural competition for a new school planned in Holešovice near the Vltava riverbank. The competition was won by a Czech team of architects led by Josef Choce, who will now develop the building project. CTK was informed about this by the spokesperson of Prague 7, Martin Vokuš. The construction is expected to begin in 2024 and is currently estimated to cost half a billion crowns. The school will be named after the actor, singer, lyricist, and humorist Jan Vodňanský.

The school will rise between Jankovcova, U Vody, and Varhulíkova streets near the left bank of the Vltava. The building will accommodate up to 540 children and will be built on the former Přadelní street, which the municipal district plans to restore and thus connect Jankovcova with the riverbank. The school is needed due to the planned residential construction in the lower Holešovice area.

The city hall anticipates a capacity for the school of two times nine classes, as well as two preparatory classes, two gyms, a staff room, a kitchen, a multifunctional dining hall that can also serve as an auditorium, two outdoor playgrounds, and additional facilities for nearly 600 students and the teaching staff. In front of the school, at the corner of Jankovcova and the restored Přádelní streets, a small square will be created with trees, rest areas, benches, and bike parking.

According to information from the city hall, 30 architectural firms applied for the competition, including those from Austria, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Vietnam. The winning proposal impressed the jury partly due to its garden design. "Between the school and the future building to the west, a generous space for a school garden will be created. This wide corridor or gap serves as a breath of fresh air for the otherwise small plot and is an elegant gift for the school, the neighboring houses, and Jankovcova street," stated one of the jury members, Belgian architect of Chinese origin Gaofei Tan.

The original name of the school was to be based on the former Přadelní street. The city hall named it last March after the writer, songwriter, poet, and theater artist Jan Vodňanský. Vodňanský was born on June 19, 1941, and passed away last March. The lyrics of one of the songs he composed with Petr Skoumal are dedicated to Holešovice.
