Prague - The buildings of the year 2015 are the Komenského Bridge in Jaroměř, the extension of the primary school in Dobřichovice, the underground complex at the Old Town Square in Mladá Boleslav, the extension of the blast furnace Bolt Tower in Ostrava, and the restoration of buildings in the Hlubina Mine area there. The results were announced this evening by the Foundation for the Development of Architecture and Construction, which organizes the competition.
This year's 23rd edition of the competition received a record 72 applications. From these, the jury selected 15 finalists in September and now also the winners. Among those left without awards were, for example, the Troja Bridge in Prague and the multifunctional center Quadrio.
"The results are a synergy of five jurors, each of whom has their own opinion and perspective. Ultimately, something different came out this year than the victory of a so-called large project," said jury member Jan Vrana to ČTK today. He described the fact that no building in Prague succeeded in this year's competition as a coincidence.
In addition to the main category, the title of Foreign Building of the Year was announced for the second time. The title can be claimed by buildings realized by Czech companies. This year, it was awarded to the AGC Glass Building administrative building in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. In the category of Urban Project of the Year 2015, the spatial plan of the town of Sušice won.
Petr Koudela from the Lower Vítkovice association, which funded two of the winning projects, told ČTK that winning the main awards is great news for the entire Ostrava region. "It's reassurance for us that the concentration of resources, whether private or grant-funded, is focused on a place where it makes sense," he stated. "It is, in a way, a rescue of objects where activities ceased in 1985 and which have been deteriorating since the start of the project," added Milan Šraml, the chief designer of the building's restoration project at Hlubina Mine. He reminded that five buildings in the Lower Vítkovice area were transformed into music rehearsal rooms, a cinema, studios, or multifunctional halls thanks to the project.
The Building of the Year title can be awarded annually to new and reconstructed buildings, urban realizations of public spaces, landscape modifications, residential and non-residential buildings, transportation and engineering constructions, and specific construction works. A condition for applying to this year's edition was the completion and commissioning or occupancy permit within the period from June 2014 to May 2015.
The construction industry is thriving this year in the Czech Republic. Construction output has been increasing by several percent year-on-year in individual months. The main reason is the drawdown of European funds. The latest figures from the Czech Statistical Office from August document a year-on-year increase in output by 4.7 percent after a strong growth of 12.3 percent in July. Growth is driven by engineering constructions, which have replaced the shortfall in building construction.
