Ostrava - The Grand Prix award in the first year of the Construction of the Year competition in the Moravian-Silesian Region was awarded to the auditorium and center for information technology at the Vysoká škola báňská - Technical University of Ostrava (VŠB-TUO). The public voted the best building of last year in an online poll as the parking house of the company Koma in Ostrava-Poruba. This was reported to ČTK by the competition's secretary, Martina Smýkalová.
Designers and builders competed in five categories. Among the buildings for civic amenities, besides the VŠB-TUO auditorium, the first prize also went to the reconstruction of the Ostrava library with the Aréna theater. In the category of residential buildings, the jury was impressed by the extension of apartments and facade solutions at Hlavní náměstí and Zámecké náměstí in Krnov. Among industrial buildings, the operating area of the company Bohuslav Mrozek in Bystřice in the Frýdek-Místek region achieved the best placement, and as the best transport, engineering, or industrial building, experts evaluated the renovated bus station in Hlučín in the Opava region.
The jury's special prize was awarded for the completion of the Institute of Social Care in Pržno in the Frýdek-Místek region.
According to the organizers, the competition aims to familiarize the public with the current level of construction and architecture and to attract young people to construction and traditional crafts. Construction production in the region is, in fact, growing due to the arrival of new investors, but vocational schools are half-empty, and companies in the region are concerned about the lack of qualified workers.
"We want to show young people that construction is a promising field. According to statistics, there is a threat that in a few years, companies from the Moravian-Silesian region will have to import masons and workers of other professions from other regions and abroad," said Pavel Ševčík, chairman of the regional council of the Union of Entrepreneurs in Construction, to ČTK.
