What connects the graduates of the Studio of Architecture I (A1) and how has their studies influenced their work? The exhibition A1.zip captures not only the history of the studio from 2000 to 2014, during which it was led by the current rector, Prof. Jindřich Smetana, along with assistants Pavla Grünerová and Josef Čančík.
Based on various fragments of the preserved archive, the collective of the exhibition's authors tried to mediate and describe the specificity and character of the studio. They capture its history as preserved in the personal memories of its graduates and teachers or in the works that originated in the studio.
“We reached out to all A1 graduates with a request for collaboration and tried to gather as much relevant data as possible. The materials and information we managed to obtain are incomplete and not always fully verified; however, the mosaic they create is – as we hope – at least partially telling,” state the authors.
A1.zip at UM Gallery will present a collection of models and visualizations of school works by former A1 students. Visitors will be able to see for themselves how much their studies have influenced the further professional development of individual architects and whether any specific connection can be observed in the work of the graduates of this studio.
Not everything could be included in the exhibition, so an integral part of the project is also the same-named accompanying publication, which simultaneously serves as a reference point for the exhibition. It works with the information that the authors of the exhibition found in various records, as well as materials sent to them by the graduates themselves. This documentation is supplemented by twelve interviews with both former students and teachers. The authors made sure their selection was as varied as possible and documented not only the period of study in the studio but also showcased the diversity of opinions and approaches to creation. Just like the data archive, the interviews are only a partial source of information and memories, but as a whole, they hint at how things truly were back then.
The exhibition and the accompanying publication simultaneously serve as an incentive for joint gatherings. The organizers expect debates on various topics and many other new insights related not only to practice and study from these meetings. The exact date of each event will be announced in advance on the website and social media of UMPRUM.
“When unpacking the archive, that is, the compressed digital file, errors may occur due to data or hardware damage, leading to a decompression failure. Similarly, the archive of Studio of Architecture I at UMPRUM from the time when it was led by Jindřich Smetana has also not been fully preserved. There is nothing left but to start piecing together the remaining fragments, mining memories, and trying to construct a blurry image that would – incompletely and temporarily – capture the memory of this place and community. The archive is not merely a permanently closed collection of lifeless relics and fragments of the past reality but rather something unstable and changing, to which the present of studio A1 continues to connect.”
