Brno - This year, the Brno Biennale will focus primarily on the phenomenon of education in graphic design and visual communication for the first time. The competitive section is thus open to students and graphic designs created at secondary or higher education institutions. Unlike previous years, the professional creations will be left out of the competition, where the biennale holds considerable prestige. The educational theme will also be reflected in accompanying exhibitions, the organizers informed.
The biennale will start on June 19 and will end on October 26. It will indicate how graphic design is currently taught, what are the models, methods, and approaches of schools and educators worldwide. One of the accompanying exhibitions, for example, will draw inspiration from various school assignments and exercises, while another will present the history of graphic design on large black boards.
Students can still apply to the competitive showcase until the end of January, with works created in the field of graphic design from January 1, 2010, to the end of 2013. This could include books, posters, new typefaces, website designs, or magazine layouts. "From the submitted works, the jury will select those that will become part of the International Showcase of the Biennale Brno," said spokeswoman of the Moravian Gallery, Martina Vašková.
The world of top professional design will once again be represented by a joint exhibition of Cornel Windlin from Switzerland and the Dutch duo Armand Mevis and Linda van Deursen. Windlin is the winner of the biennale from 2010, while the Dutch pair succeeded two years later. Rostislav Vaněk, a well-known Czech author of book and magazine graphic design, posters, and recently also new typefaces, will have a retrospective exhibition at the biennale.
The Brno graphic design showcase was founded in 1963 and is one of the oldest and largest industry events. Attendance in the new millennium has repeatedly exceeded 30,000 people.
