In the architecturally exceptionally valuable building of the Embassy of the Czech Republic, which is also home to the Czech Center in Berlin, an exhibition showcasing the most significant Czech department stores from the 1960s and 1970s is being presented in its German premiere.

The exhibition EINKAUFEN IN DER MODERNE, which opened on April 21, 2016, is an extension of the exhibition section of the project KOTVY MÁJE / Czech Department Stores 1965–1975, authored by architect and architectural historian Petr Klíma. For the Czech Center in Berlin, the exhibition, which has also been presented in several Czech cities as well as in Bratislava and Szczecin, is expanded with several artistic interventions. While Dana Bartoníčková thematizes the sensory experience of the department store environment in her installation, Barbora Šimonová captures two significant department stores by Růžena Žertová in her moving images, as well as the environment of the architect's own house. The collages of Martin Czeller, dedicated to visual smog in the exteriors of the examined buildings, navigate the boundary between fine art and graphic design. The exhibition also includes a light installation of a preserved neon sign with the inscription PRIOR (from the former department store of the same name in Olomouc) and a collection of original drawings by architects Věra Machoninová and Růžena Žertová.

The designs and realizations of department stores played an irreplaceable role in Czech post-war architecture. This includes not only the most well-known objects such as Kotvy or Máje in Prague but also regional department stores in Pardubice, Ústí nad Labem, Havířov, and Plzeň, specialized department stores, houses of production and consumer cooperatives, or the Liberec shopping center Ještěd, demolished in 2009. The selection includes, alongside realized buildings, unfulfilled studies by Alena Šrámková and a non-realized design for the Jihlava Prior by Růžena Žertová. A brief overview also presents contemporary Slovak department stores. The exhibition will run until June 3, 2016.
