Vila Stiassni will commemorate Klára Becková-Loosová, the last wife of Adolf Loos The book “Private Portrait” dedicated to the life of the father of modern architecture, previously unknown family photographs, and the behind-the-scenes creation of famous buildings will be presented in an exhibition accessible at the Stiassni villa in Brno from February 2 to the end of April, every Friday to Sunday. This year marks the 85th anniversary of the moment when one of the most famous world architects passed away at the Dr. Schwarzwald sanatorium in the Vienna suburb of Kalksburg. His last wife, a writer and photographer, soon published a biographical book that became one of the most-read publications associated with modern architecture. However, the exhibition that visitors can see at the Stiassni villa is not only dedicated to this book. It maps the tumultuous fates of Klára Becková, her husband, and architectural realizations designed by Adolf Loos on the territory of Czechoslovakia. The exhibition premiered last year in Plzeň, Klára Becková-Loosová's birthplace. The author is David Růžička, a writer and journalist who prepared the exhibition under the auspices of the Center for West Bohemian Writers. The exhibition is now moving to Brno, the birthplace of Adolf Loos, and the place where Loos remodeled the interior of a chateau for businessman in the sugar industry, Viktor Bauer. Thanks to Loos, Klára also met a number of world personalities, writers, painters, musicians, and filmmakers who also appear in the exhibition. “We can say that Loos was a direct trigger of Klára's literary ambitions,” notes David Růžička. He adds a little tidbit: “Thanks to the Beck and Paterson families from the USA, we are also exhibiting several unpublished photographs, one of which visitors will see Klára's and Loos's little dog Beau – Beau.” The exhibition panels are complemented by a sculptural portrait of Adolf Loos by the Brno architect and sculptor Zdeněk Makovský.
