Adolf Loos

Place: Study and Documentation Center Norbertov
Date: April 12, 2018 – June 17, 2018

The exhibition presents the results of a survey that led to the discovery of new realizations by Adolf Loos (1870–1933) in the interiors of a classicist chateau located in the Brno exhibition area, designed for industrialist Viktor Knight Bauer von Rohrfelden (1876–1939). The content of the exhibition is based on preserved confiscation inventories that document the currently missing interior furnishings and the extent of the architect's interventions in the modifications of Bauer's chateau. Thanks to the connection of information from the inventories with the visual material of expropriated photographs, it is now possible to define the original form of the modifications designed by Loos, whose scope is disproportionately larger than previously assumed.
Viktor Bauer had already engaged Loos several times: in addition to the family villa in Dresden, the Vienna apartment on Friedrichstrasse, and the villa of the sugar factory director in Hrušovany near Brno, there is also speculation about his collaboration in the furnishing of the interiors of the chateau in Kunín, which the family inherited in 1915, or his authorship in the restoration of the sugar factory in Hrušovany, which burned down in the same year. Through the images of an exceptionally talented amateur photographer, who was quite unusually the builder himself, the exhibition presents not only the architecture but also the lifestyle of its users.
