The Architecture Gallery Brno is launching Polish Culture Days in Brno 2018 with an exhibition of young Polish architects.
On Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at 6:00 PM, the vernissage of the exhibition Young Polish Architects 2.5D will take place at the Architecture Gallery Brno. The festive evening will be complemented by a short lecture by architect Małgorzata Kuciewicz from the Warsaw studio Centrala.
The Architecture Gallery, in collaboration with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute and the Polish Institute, brings the exhibition of young Polish architects, which was first presented a year ago at the Estonian Museum of Architecture in Tallinn. The curator of that museum, Mait Väljas, and Polish architect Łukasz Wojciechowski jointly created an exhibition that showcases the work of a young generation of Polish architects. The pair of curators aimed to present projects at the exhibition that not only look good but are also significant for local communities. The authors of the exhibited projects are around 40 years old, meaning they still remember what it was like to live in the shadow of the Soviet Union, but at the same time, they began their professions during the integration into the European Union. The projects touch on various issues in different contexts and represent various scales and programs. Whether temporary installations or extensive public utility buildings, each of these designs tells a story. Visitors will see tower buildings in large cities, forgotten unused plots, suburbs bursting with color, towns and villages accessible only via dusty roads.
“These buildings are diverse, but if you ask what connects them, I will tell you it’s the elements I’ve seen in your architecture – constraints and balance in material selection, in the relationship between content and context, form creation, etc. These examples represent not only success but also the effort and ambition shared by both countries. They are buildings in which architects have invested themselves (the Serwus project), or partly built with their own hands (the Salonek project), or realized thanks to a long-term educational campaign (the Warszawa Powiśle project), and on the other hand, designs that won competitions or were commissioned directly by clients. The exhibition includes only one residential building – as is evident, such constructions are designed by young architects more in Poland – but in a way, I intuitively wanted to show you more buildings that participate in social life.”, adds curator Łukasz Wojciechowski regarding the exhibition.
As the title of the exhibition suggests, the projects are presented not only on panels but also in an unconventional format of 2.5D models.
“I don’t like displaying on panels because you can look at pictures online. A much better reason to visit the museum is the models. We decided to present the exhibited buildings in an easily transportable 2.5D format, which you know from video games, old dioramas, or children’s books. After consulting with the exhibiting architects, we prepared for you multilayered panels that demonstrate how the buildings are arranged. They do not have precise scales but maintain proportions, so the viewer gains the correct perception of space. Don’t hesitate to also visit the websites of the individual studios, which offer many great designs.”, describes the models curator Łukasz Wojciechowski.
The official opening of the exhibition YOUNG POLISH ARCHITECTS 2.5D as part of the launch of Polish Culture Days in Brno will take place on Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at 6:00 PM at the Architecture Gallery Brno. The opening will be accompanied by a short lecture by architect Małgorzata Kuciewicz from the Warsaw studio Centrala.
The vernissage will also be attended by Katarzyna Zamoyska from the Adam Mickiewicz Institute and the director of the Polish Institute Matěj Ruczaj, who will personally inaugurate the Polish Culture Days in Brno 2018.
The exhibition will be preceded by a lecture by curator Łukasz Wojciechowski on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at 4:00 PM in the small auditorium A118 at the Faculty of Architecture of the Brno University of Technology. (in English)
