Petr Brauner

Olomouc – The Museum of Art in Olomouc will open an exhibition on Thursday showcasing one of the most significant figures of the Olomouc art scene, architect Petr Brauner. He is behind important buildings in Olomouc, such as Pavilion A at the Flora Exhibition Grounds and the tower house with a water reservoir on Nová Street. The exhibition, which will last until October 13, offers original projects and period photographs that show the original appearance of his buildings, museum representatives told journalists today. The comprehensive overview of the work of the eighty-two-year-old architect will be presented by the museum for the very first time.

One of the author's first major projects was Pavilion A in Olomouc. "It was an internal company competition that I won. I worked on the project at home after work because it was an above-plan project," said Brauner. The design of the building was strongly influenced by its purpose - flower exhibitions. "The exhibition pavilion should look completely different. It should be a box that can accommodate various lighting and, above all, it must be variable. Back then, in youthful naivety or romance, I conceived a group of six trees with branches that held other structures of the pavilion and corresponded with Flora as a flower exhibition," added the architect.

In the case of the tower apartment building with a water reservoir on Nová Street, he came up with an atypical construction, utilizing the technique of prefabricated formwork, which was a complete novelty at that time. "The trick was that there are two water reservoirs. One is in the middle and the other surrounds it. Such a requirement was made by the structural engineer, which prevented eccentric overload of the building that would have occurred if the water reservoir was emptied. It was very interesting work," noted the architect.

His further career was marked by the year 1968 and subsequent dismissal from Stavoprojekt due to a painted invitation to a Saint Nicholas celebration, where a large Russian soldier with a submachine gun stood over small devils and angels. Brauner eventually joined DRUPOS, the design office of the Union of Housing Cooperatives, where he designed, for example, a crematorium in Šumperk and the operational building of Česká pojišťovna in Prostějov. A year after the revolution, the Brauner couple founded their own office. He is credited with the design of the Olomouc tax office and the former Gemo hotel.

The last work of Petr Brauner will be completed by builders this year, and he is no longer taking on any additional contracts. However, whether this is a definitive conclusion, the author who has lived in Přerov for the last seven years does not know.
